Gruyère, the cheese capital of Switzerland
Description:
The medieval village of Gruyeres. It is located in the canton of Fribourg on the top of a hill at an altitude of 830 m.
Gruyère is a world-famous cheese-making region that has produced one of Switzerland’s most beloved cheeses since the 16th century. It is one of the most popular cheeses for traditional Swiss fondue, Gruyer is a yellow, hard cheese without holes, has a nutty taste and a spicy aroma. According to the old tradition, cheese is made only from June to September. Gruyer ripens for 4-8 months and has a fruity slightly salty taste. From 400 liters of milk, 35 kg of cheese is obtained.
Visit the Cheese Museum, where you can observe the various processes of cheese production, as well as taste it. Here you can learn all about the traditional production of Le Gruyère AOC cheese going back in time and passed down from generation to generation. Farmers deliver milk twice a day, and the cheesemaker processes it into cheese.
The interactive Cheesemaker Museum provides an opportunity to listen to how cow bells ring, stroke a cow, taste the aroma of alpine meadows and, of course, taste young and mature cheeses.
At the cheese factory there is a shop where you can buy souvenirs and favorite cheese and also a restaurant where you can try dishes with the famous cheese.
In the second half of the tour you can walk through the streets of medieval Gruyère and explore the city.
Gruyère is a small picturesque town formerly owned by the Counts of Gruyère. The coat of arms of the Gruyer family depicts a crane, which became the symbol of the city. Translated from French, Grue means crane.
Gruyère Castle, built in the 11th century, was the residence of the Counts of Gruyère, who for 5 centuries (from XI to XVI) ruled in the valley. We will learn the history of the castle and what a curse it carries on itself. Be sure to walk around the walls of the castle – the hill offers a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains!
At the foot of the Chateau de Gruyeres is a beautifully preserved medieval village, with one main street, rue de Bourg, where life still flows leisurely. The central street is replete with souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants, inviting you to try a traditional Swiss dish - fondue or raclette with Gruyere cheese and taste for dessert a local delicacy - double cream with raspberries and air, melting meringue!
In Gruyer is the museum of Hans Rudolf Giger - a brilliant Swiss artist, author of surreal images from the film "Aliens". Giger bought one of the old houses near Gruyère Castle. At Gruyer he spent the last years of his life. Opposite the museum is a cafe, stylized for the scenery for the film “Aliens”. You can rest here and have a cup of coffee.
