Pepper Museum
Szent Istvan kiraly ut 6. 6300 Kalocsa
About the company:
In the city of Kalochi, the only, in Hungary, pepper museum was created. It contains a collection of peppers of various colors and shades, sweet and burning paprika. The museum is located in the building of an old mill, where pepper was once ground.
Visiting the museum in Kalochi, you can learn the most intimate moments in the history of cultivation and processing of paprika. Once upon a time, the Hungarians knew nothing about red pepper. In Europe, and in particular in Hungary, red pepper came in the XVI century from Central America. Red pepper pods preferred not to eat, but to decorate the houses of noble nobles. Only at the end of the 19th century, pepper began to be eaten, and before that it served simply as a decoration of the table and kitchen. And only in the second half of the XIX century, red pepper became an integral attribute of the culinary art of Hungarian national cuisine.
In the museum you can learn the history of growing pepper, modern and ancient ways of its preparation, processing. As in the old days, now pepper is grown by seedlings, and harvested by hand. Lectures in the museum offer to smell different varieties of pepper, also tell the whole way of processing paprika, from cultivation to grinding.
