The best place to pay honors to your ancestors and learn more about
your Russian Jewish heritage is the old Jewish cemetery at the outskirts of St. Petersburg. Up to the middle of the XIX century there were virtually no Jews in the Imperial capital: they were strictly banned from leaving the Jewish Pale. Little by little, Jews started to appear in St. Petersburg: the ban was lifted on special occasions for the richest and thus most useful for the crown; then retired soldiers were allowed to pick their place of residence; then holders of University degrees, doctors, dentists and skilled certified mechanics were welcomed.

In 1875, a new Jewish cemetery was opened. Since then, dozens of thousands have found their last rest on this plot of land. Let us have a walk along the paths; let us remember the lives and deeds of the most renowned members of the community - rabbis, scholars, doctors and artists.

It is a peaceful place, ideal for good stories and solitary meditations. You can have both!

If your friends and relatives are buried here, make sure to warn me so that I can find their graves beforehand and show you to them promptly.
