The city was founded in the X-XI century, and the first known mention of it is the chronicle of 1139.
The history of Torzhok (hence its name) is associated with intensive trade. In ancient times it was called Trade, later - New Trade and Trade.
The city has an advantageous geographical position on the main tourist road between Moscow and St. Petersburg, for many years it was a trading point on the way from the south of Russia to Veliky Novgorod and St. Petersburg.
Torzhok glorified folk art craft - gold sewing, which developed in the city since the XII century. Shitey admired A. S. Pushkin, the works of the masters were exhibited at prestigious foreign exhibitions.

At 7 km from Torzhok, an amazing architectural and ethnographic open-air museum "Vasilevo" was opened. The first part is devoted to the culture of noble estates, the second - to the traditional Russian village life. It filmed an epic scene of the battle of dark and light forces in the blockbuster “Night Watch” by Timur Bekmambetov.
