Danish cuisine dishes
Description:
It is no secret that people travel to learn something new, see something unprecedented and experience unusual sensations. This fully applies to both city sights, customs and traditions of the country, the color of the locals and, of course, local cuisine. I suggest you go on a gastronomic trip to Copenhagen during which we will try traditional Danish dishes and visit the most popular restaurants.
The journey through the Danish restaurants and pages of Danish history will begin on the Town Hall Square, where we will get acquainted with modern Denmark, learn what the capital of the Danish kingdom boasts today and why people living here for several years in a row were recognized as the happiest nation on the planet despite the fact that people living here pay some of the highest taxes in the world. Then we will delve into the historical part of Copenhagen, visit the oldest city square, see the place of public executions of the Middle Ages and one of the unusual buildings of the Danish capital – the Round Tower, and learn under what circumstances all power in Scandinavia was concentrated in the hands of the Danish monarch and why for 500 years Denmark and Norway had one king.
One of the first gastronomic points of our trip will be a restaurant in the city center, where we will try a Danish multi-layer sandwich (date - smørrebrød), when a leaf of green salad lies on a piece of rye bread lubricated with oil, then something meat or fish on top, then some fresh vegetables and it looks all very creative, tasty and appetizing.
Another stop will be Christiansborg, where we will learn under what circumstances Copenhagen was founded, who was the founder of Copenhagen – Bishop Absalon, see the only underwater sculptures in the city and find out how Copenhagen from a fishing village managed to turn into one of the most popular capitals of northern Europe.
And here we stand on the embankment of New Harbour, which, thanks to its colorful houses, a canal, numerous restaurants, cafes and moored ancient ships, is a kind of tourist center of Copenhagen. Denmark has long been famous for herring. In the Middle Ages, it is said that there was so much of it in the Øresund Strait that “it was possible to walk like dry land from Copenhagen to the Swedish city of Malmo”. It’s a joke, of course, but it’s true that herring has been a Danish export throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. One of the restaurants on the promenade will also become our point of gastronomic tour, in which we will try 4 different types of herring under vodka or traditional Jacobsen beer, which, incidentally, is not exported and is the pride of the Danes.
Back to the pages of Danish history and legends of the Danish past! We are waiting for stories about the fairy tale writer Andersen, the matchmaking of Danish queens to Russian princesses, the story of Danish kings of the past. We will visit the embankment of Langelinie, near the house of the Actor and the New Royal Opera, see the marble church, the Gefion fountain, the museum of naval ships, the office of the Maersk company - the largest company in the world engaged in container transportation; the only Anglican Church in Denmark and the winter residence of the Danish Queen Margaret 2nd - Amalienborg. Here we will talk about the royal family, what Denmark earns today, what Danish brands are world famous, under what circumstances Denmark lost Norway, and how it happened that in the mid-18th century Denmark was the leading sugar exporter in Europe without having its own sugar production.
At the end of our gastronomic trip we will visit the seafood restaurant, which was founded in 1854. This is the place where the Russian tsars Alexander 3rd and Nicholas 2nd dined, as well as many Danish monarchs of the past. Fish and seafood have always been in the diet of the Danes since Viking times. So here we will try seafood and, if desired, various Danish desserts.
Important: the tour should be booked at least a week in advance, as you need to book tables in various restaurants in Copenhagen. Planned visits to 3 Danish restaurants can be regarded as a full lunch.
Features of the excursion: everyone who likes to try something new and wants to get acquainted with the national Danish cuisine will like it. It is recommended for everyone who came to Copenhagen for the first time, as during the tour you will visit the key points of the city and hear many interesting stories and legends of the Danish past.
