Abensberg

Beer tour or Oktoberfest all year round

Description:

To call beer simply the national drink of the Germans is to say nothing. It's a whole philosophy, a way of life. The real kingdom of beer is Bavaria. 2/3 of German breweries are located here. Almost every Bavarian city, many villages and monasteries have its brewery (and often more than one). Bavarian beer is a global brand! It was in Bavaria almost 500 years ago that the Beer Purity Act was passed, which is still observed today.

In Bavaria there was an interesting custom to check the quality of beer: on a wooden bench you should pour a drink and sit on it in leather pants. If the taster stood up with the bench, the beer was recognized as quality. If the bench was not glued - beer could be safely poured or given to the enemy.

For lovers and connoisseurs of beer we offer a beer tour. You will get acquainted with the beer history of Bavaria, try rare, "privileged" beers.

We will drive along the beer road of Bavaria and visit unusual breweries. We offer you a holiday of beer, the taste of which you will take with you.

The beer tour begins in the town of Abensberg. This place of beer pilgrimage is the Abensberg Kuhlbauer Hundertwasser brewery. Beer has been served to the local bishop’s table for centuries. On the territory of the brewery, a 35-meter tower was built according to the project of the famous artist and architect Friedrich Hundertwasser. This is an example of a very unusual architecture. Rounded shapes, dancing windows, uneven floors and ceilings, organic lines, a golden onion tower - all these are typical elements of Hundertwasser buildings. In the basement of the brewery is a unique collection of glasses for wheat beer - 4200 pieces. You will visit the museum and brewery “World of Beer in Abensberg”, see how beer is brewed and of course enjoy freshly brewed beer (brewed in accordance with the “law on purity of beer” of 1516) in an unusual place.

Then we move to Kelheim, where on the high bank of the Danube stands the majestic Temple of Liberation (in honor of the victory over Napoleon). If we don’t want to watch it, we don’t want to be distracted from beer.

Next, our beer tour continues at the Ducal Brewery of Weisser Brauchaus.

In 1548, Baron von Degenberg received from the then ruling Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria the privilege of brewing wheat beer. Until then, brewing beer from wheat was prohibited. There were two reasons. First, the wheat had to go to baking bread. Second, by giving his vassals the privilege of brewing wheat beer, the duke formed political and military alliances. In case of disagreement, the privilege could be revoked. By 1602, the von Degenberg family was extinct and the privilege returned to the next duke, Maximilian IV. He takes over existing beer production and establishes his own brewery, Weisser Brauhaus, which still exists today. Until the 19th century, the production of wheat beer remained the exclusive privilege of the Bavarian dukes. By the way, due to the income from the sale of wheat beer, they managed to significantly replenish the budget and get rid of long-term debts. The next key moment in the history of this brewery is 1872. At this time, for the first time in Bavarian history, the privilege of brewing wheat beer is not given to the titled nobleman, but to the mere mortal Georg Schneider. It starts production in Munich. After his brewery in Munich was destroyed in the bombing, he walks 90km to Kelheim, where everything starts from scratch. Today, the Weisser Brauhaus Brewery in Kelheim is run by George VI of the same Schneider family.

Then we transfer to the ship and sail along the Danube fault. That's 6 km. The Danube for its extraordinary beauty is considered one of the natural wonders of Germany. 15 million years ago, a meteorite fell here, which formed a huge crater and a bizarre fault in the Bavarian Alps. The shape of the crater can still be seen today.

We sail to the ancient monastery of Weltenburg (617), where monks have been brewing beer since 1050. Today it is the oldest operating brewery in the world! Beer has been brewed here for 10 centuries! The beer you will drink won awards at international beer festivals as the best dark beer in 2002, 2004, 2012, 2014 and 2015! But also appreciated golden yellow beer, created in honor of the date of the founding of the brewery. We will also see the monastery and the church of St. George is one of the best examples of Baroque in southern Germany. The monastery stands on the banks of the Danube, where you can swim in the summer. If you did not take swimsuits and swimsuits, no problem, in Germany the sight of a “free body” will not surprise anyone.
