“Having slayed evil, good will abide in this world without limit.”
Shota Rustaveli
Shota Rustaveli’s Knight in Tiger Skin is one of the most amazing and mysterious creations created by human genius. About the author we know only that he is a contemporary of Queen Tamara, perhaps the most famous ruler of Georgia. Few people know by heart all one and a half thousand verses of the poem, but many of them went to the people, turning into proverbs and sayings, and the names of the heroes of the poem - Tinatin, Avtandil, Tariel - are representatives of more than one generation of Georgians. Shota Rustaveli is sometimes called the "first Georgian tamada" and the lines of the poem, indeed, can be a good parting, and a word of consolation, recognition and vow, they are equally close to the wiser of knowledge, and the young man who is still trying to understand the meaning of life.
The appearance of this work for world culture was like a grand archaeological discovery. Each nation creates its own song and gives birth to a world poet. Such was the chosen one of Georgia, Shota Rustaveli, who in the XII century gave his homeland a banner and a call - "Vephistkaosani" - "wearing a leopard skin."
For centuries, Rustaveli’s work, written in an unknown world, a language not yet studied by anyone, lived only in the poet’s native country, south of the Caucasus Mountains, in the gorges of Chorokha, Rioni, Kura and Alazani. On this walk, I will talk about the intricate fate of the original poem, the most famous translations, we will talk about the twisting twists of the plot, the secret meanings and the amazing humanistic power of its content, how the poem became the Georgian Bible and influenced the national consciousness in their homeland and what lessons can be learned from it by representatives of other peoples.
