Historical information about the city of Bakhchisarai

Bakhchisarai is one of the most famous historical cities of the Crimea, the former capital of the Crimean Khanate. Its name comes from the Crimean Tatar words “bağcha” (“garden”) and “sarai” (“palace”), that is, “palace in the garden” or “garden city”.

Ancient history of the territory

Long before the appearance of Bakhchisarai itself, settlements of various peoples existed in its vicinity. Favorable valley of the river Churuk-Su was inhabited in ancient times. In the Middle Ages there were important centers:

  • Chufut-Kale is a powerful fortress city on a rocky plateau;

  • Salachik – the early residence of the Crimean khans;

  • Eski-Yurt is a major trade and craft center of the Golden Horde period.

After the collapse of the Golden Horde in the XV century, the Crimean Khanate arose, which was ruled by the Geray dynasty. The first khans placed their residences in Salachik and the fortress of Kyrk-Yer (now Chufut-Kale).

Foundation of the city

In the late XV - early XVI century Khan Mengli I Geray began the construction of a new Khan's residence. His son, Sahib I Geray, about 1532 moved the capital of the khanate to a new palace residence, around which Bakhchisaray grew.

The center of the new city became famous

Khan's palace

- the only surviving example of the palace architecture of the Crimean khans in the world. Its construction began in the XVI century and continued by subsequent rulers.

Capital of the Crimean Khanate

From the XVI to the XVIII century Bakhchisarai was the political, cultural and religious center of the Crimean Khanate. Here was the residence of the khans, state bodies met, foreign ambassadors were received and international treaties were concluded.

The city quickly developed and acquired an eastern appearance:

  • mosques and madrasahs were built;

  • craft workshops worked;

  • trade has developed;

  • Gardens, fountains and palace complexes were created.

By the middle of the XVII century, Bakhchisarai was one of the largest cities of the peninsula and had about two thousand houses.

Destruction in the eighteenth century

During the Russo-Turkish wars, Bakhchisaray was repeatedly attacked. Especially difficult for the city was 1736, when the army under the command of Field Marshal Christopher Minich occupied and burned the capital of the khanate. Many palaces, mosques and residential areas were destroyed. Later the city was restored, but the former power was not reached.

As part of the Russian Empire

In 1783, after the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Empire, the Crimean Khanate ceased to exist. Bakhchisarai lost the status of the capital and gradually became a provincial city. Nevertheless, it remained an important cultural center of the Crimean Tatars.

In the XIX century, the city became famous far beyond the Crimea thanks to the work of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin “Bakhchisarai Fountain”, written after visiting the Khan’s Palace and the famous Fountain of Tears. This work made Bakhchisaray one of the symbols of the romantic East in Russian literature.

XX century

At the beginning of the XX century, Bakhchisarai was one of the main centers of the national movement of the Crimean Tatars. Education, culture and publishing were actively developed here.

During the Second World War, the city was in the zone of fierce battles for the Crimea. After the war, the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 changed the demographic composition of the city.
