Rostourism: we need to develop a special type of tourism in our country after the pandemic

Rosturizm has prepared initiatives for the development of ecological tourism in Russia. Such a holiday will be in demand after the pandemic, you need to think about its accessibility and comfort.

Russia can become a world leader in the segment of ecotourism, says the head of Rostourism Zarina Doguzova. The demand for eco-tourism is growing: “The audience of tourists who go on eco-tourism is growing every year, and it is getting younger. A huge number of young people are ready to go to nature and even prefer this type of recreation to a more mass beach holiday.”

Russia is lagging behind the pace of development of the global ecotourism industry. In the United States, 318 million people visit protected areas a year, in Russia - 9 million people, Kenya - 2 million tourists.

Russia is losing revenue from ecotourism. The United States earns $20 billion annually from ecotourism, Australia $3.5 billion, and Kenya $500 million. Russia’s income is about $20 million a year.

Doguzova stressed that Russia should be compared with the best in order to formulate and make systematic steps in the development of this direction.

“We are a country that ranks first in the world in terms of protected areas. And we just have to be among the best in the world in terms of environmental nature travel. The economies of the leading countries do not just make money on ecotourism. With this money, on tax revenues, nature reserves live, develop, become better, and infrastructure improves.”

Problems:

  • lack of affordable places with quality infrastructure for tourists
  • Lack of available information on existing infrastructure,
  • Legal barriers for entrepreneurs.

Rostourism, the Ministry of Ecology, the Agency for Strategic Initiatives are preparing legislative initiatives to develop this type of tourism.

On the website Russia.Travel there will be information about 150 glampings working in the country. Rosturizm is ready to finance up to 70% of entrepreneurs’ spending on the construction of such modular facilities, and up to 100 such accommodations can be created in July and August.

“Importantly, the same investor will be able to apply for both the expansion of an existing glamping or the creation of a new one, and the development of the territory around it.”

The implementation of the project is especially important this season, when the recreation vector of Russians has shifted towards domestic travel.
