In travel, it is important to discover something new for yourself, and to enjoy every moment
Talented photographer and enthusiastic traveler Maria Pechenkona told the portal "Personal guide" about the subtleties of the travel journalist.
Please tell me about yourself. How did the fascination with photography begin?
My name is Maria, I have been interested in photography since school, I started shooting at the age of 14, the first pictures were taken with the simplest digital camera, which was then in fashion. I was incredibly passionate about this activity, it inspired and brought amazing moments into my life.
To save those moments was wonderful, it was what my soul was striving for.
Do you agree with the famous statement “Beauty in the eye of the beholder”? Is it possible to say that beauty lies in the eyes of the photographer?
It is difficult to disagree with this statement, regardless of profession, experience, moral values of a person, it is true. For me personally, beauty lies not in my perception of the world, but in the ability to see moments of beauty, to be able to enjoy them, I always tried to show it through photography.
I know you’ve worked in many genres. What's your specialty?
I am most interested in landscape, street, architectural photography, Animal – photo.
But most of the time, I shoot reports, mostly from various events, concerts and festivals.
How do you find them or do they find you?
Most likely, both, often I shoot for commercial purposes, but when traveling or just in my spare time I shoot what I like.
What are the features of the travel photography genre?
It depends on the goals. If you shoot in the form of travel journalism, then there will be more specific criteria, for example, the choice of place or compliance with technical rules, - it is important to understand that in the genre of travel photography, the same rules are used as in landscape photography: compliance with the guiding lines, horizontals and verticals in the frame, the absence of a "burdened" horizon - this is for example.
But if you are shooting for yourself, just on a trip, the technical rules of shooting are not necessary, it is important to preserve memories.
But there are a few important points, first – you need to know the rules of shooting the place (country, city), where you are going, whether it is possible to shoot local residents, etc. (here in general you need to remember about simple humanity, not all people like if they are filmed secretly, it is better to ask permission, and also clarify whether it is possible to publish pictures).
When you go on a trip, you want to do a good travel photography, you need an approach that is more thoughtful and conscious. You need to ask yourself the most important question: “Why am I shooting and why am I taking this picture?”
In travel photography, it is important not only to qualitatively remove the sights of the place, it is important to convey the atmosphere, cultural characteristics and your own feelings.
You can try to take photos of not the most beautiful and popular places, and places and people about which little is known, not so popular, and if they are famous, then try to present them from a completely different side.
What makes a good travel photography?
• Plot
• Decisive moment
• Composition
• Exposition
Please name the interesting places for travel photography that you have visited. Where do you dream of going?
I don’t really travel much, especially lately.
But I love to travel around Russia, I love Bashkiria, it is incredible, I am always happy when I am there.
In 2017, I was in Crimea, we went by car, so we saw a lot of places, but I believe that we will have to go to Crimea several more times.
I've often been in peter You will have to go there many, many more times.
Peter is one of my favorite cities, you can walk there for hours, after the first two trips, I no longer look for specific places, but just explore the city with a camera in my hands.
Well, in general, I travel, you can call it – “lodging around in search of shots”, do not have a specific place to shoot, but rather explore and learn the world around them, surprise everything and enjoy.
I dream to visit Lake Baikal, Altai, Kamchatka, if from foreign destinations, it is Japan. Greece. South Korea and ItalyThere is a small dream to go to the Okavango River and the Kalahari Desert – but this is perhaps the most difficult direction in the organization.
How are photographers treated in travel? Have you had a negative attitude towards yourself?
Photographers are treated rather positively, there has never been a negative attitude towards me personally. But in the modern world, anyone can pass for a professional photographer, with compact cameras (I mean digital SLR cameras, not the same as they were in the 19th-20th centuries).
It is difficult to distinguish a professional from an amateur without talking to him.
Everyone has cameras on their phones now. What does it take to become a professional?
Perhaps, there is little that distinguishes a professional from an amateur - the ability to see, feel moments, experience and knowledge - of course important aspects of the issue, but the sense of the decisive moment, the awareness of the beautiful - and the desire to preserve this, and save not only for yourself - but let's say convey and tell everyone the story, your feelings, feelings and emotions - leave a piece of your identity and soul in the frame.
These are moments when you freeze, merge with the world around you, are in harmony with yourself, but at the same time you are open to the most incredible, new and amazing. These are the moments when inspiration overwhelms you and you’re ready to see a little more.
I think that what is important in travel is to discover something new for yourself, and to enjoy every moment, it does not matter if you are a professional or an amateur.
