Association of Tour Operators of Russia: the domestic tourist market of the Russian Federation in 2020 received trump cards
Director of the tour operator Intourist Viktor Topolkarayev said that the crisis faced by the Russian tourism market due to the coronavirus pandemic is unprecedented. Businesses have to work under conditions of complete uncertainty.
Viktor Topolkarayev at the regional online tourism forum Intourist said that the situation is complicated by the fact that international tourism is in a state of collapse.
In these conditions, the “go-ahead” and the driver of the development of the entire tourism industry is domestic tourism.
We have a unique opportunity to show the Russians what a multifaceted and original country we live in. It's time to try our "homemade delicacies."
In his opinion, the launch of an electronic visa from January 2021 will give an impetus to the development of inbound tourism.
In the outbound tourism market, V. Topolkarayev sees no prerequisites for the opening of European destinations before late autumn and winter. The reason is high statistics on new cases of coronavirus in Russia.
The experience of tour operators and travel agents will help develop the domestic product in the future. In 2021, tour operators will continue to expand the range in domestic destinations, making them more accessible, including through charters.
According to V. Topolkorayev, domestic tourism will continue to develop and when the borders open. To support the domestic industry, the tour operator develops a popular format of city breaks.
“These are tours of 2-3 days. City breaks are a popular and actively developing format around the world. In Russia, there are many interesting destinations where you can go for the weekend. These are Kaliningrad, Altai, Baikal, Golden Ring, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tatarstan. We will actively develop such a product.”
Maya Lomidze, Executive Director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), assesses the state of the tourism industry as “quite satisfactory” in the current circumstances. In her opinion, the worst predictions did not come true. Including the “maximum energy saving mode”, the tourism industry is preparing for a restart – the domestic tourist market of the Russian Federation in 2020 received trump cards, the season will be successful for the regions and for travel companies.
According to her, the trend of this season is the arrival of organized tourism in regions previously uninteresting to tour operators. The most important point is that before this year, the regions that could not provide a capacious product in terms of the number of tourists were not interested in organized tourism, but now everything has changed. This is, in my opinion, an important strategic point that can be shot in the coming years.
