When and what countries are open to tourists?
The tourism industry is trying to arrange a “restart” and not to miss at least part of the summer season.
The EU plans to open its internal borders in June, and some Caribbean islands are expected to restart.
Bali – the island is in no hurry to open. The first tourists are expected to be accepted by October, if the level of infection remains low. Foreign nationals are not allowed to enter the island.
Cyprus The recovery of tourism has almost begun. Hotels opened on 1 June, and from 9 June in theory already allowed flights from countries in group A. Among them - from Greece, Malta, Bulgaria, Norway, Austria, Finland, Slovenia, Hungary, Israel, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia and Lithuania.
From June 20, Cyprus will allow flights from Group B countries – Switzerland, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Negotiations are underway with 23 other countries. At the moment, tourists will have to provide a valid certificate confirming a negative result on the Covid-19. Cyprus offers to cover the costs of tourists if they get the coronavirus on vacation in the country.
Egypt The country is gradually opening hotels that meet certain requirements, such as the presence of a medical center with a permanent doctor on the spot. For now, work is only possible for domestic tourists with hotel capacity restrictions. The launch of international flights is planned from July.
F.rank Entering from “third countries” outside the EU, the country is waiting for a 14-day quarantine, which will not be lifted until July 24. The official position of the authorities is that “the closure of borders is the rule, and permission to cross the border is the exception.” However, many attractions – such as the Eiffel Tower and Versailles – have already opened to visitors. The beaches are also scheduled to restart in July-August, but the country relies primarily on domestic tourism.
Georgia - expects to receive incoming tourists from July 1. The country has developed a three-stage “anti-crisis” plan, which includes a marketing campaign designed to promote Georgia as a “safe destination.” The opening of the boundaries of the plan is expected only at the last stage.
Germany For EU countries, the country plans to open from Monday, June 15. But for “third countries”, the country can be closed for entry and exit until the end of summer – that is, until August 31. Turkey, for example, has already criticized the decision. Officials are also considering entering from Turkey, the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, although a final decision has not yet been made. At the same time, hotels can work from May 29, and some restaurants were restarted on May 18.
Greece - plan to allow the entry of tourists from June 15. At the same time, international flights to Greece, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, will gradually resume from July 1, for tourists from 29 countries – mainly the European Union and the Eurozone, as well as Australia, Israel, Japan and China. At the same time, they will not be required to have a certificate of “safety”, but selective tests are possible “when necessary”. However, Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis indicated that health officials would carry out selective tests when necessary.
Italy It has been open to EU travellers since June 3, prompting criticism from other EU members. This discovery, Prime Minister D. Conte called “calculated risk”. “We have to accept it, otherwise we can never restart.” Famous Italian museums such as the Vatican Museum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence are gradually opening.
The Maldives is likely to open to tourists in July, although it was previously expected to close before the end of the year.
Mexico It is planned to open the country “step by step and by region”. The resorts of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum - from June 15 - said Marisol Vanegas, the state's tourism minister.
Portugal For tourists from the EU, the country is tentatively due to open after June 15, and for now “gradually considering” the weakening of border controls. For tourists, Rita Marquez, the country’s Secretary of State for Tourism, has unveiled a “don’t cancel, don’t delay” scheme that allows you to move any pre-planned tours to Portugal until the end of 2021 – both through travel agencies, hotel reservations and Airbnb, for trips scheduled from March 13 to September 30, 2020.
Thailand - Still closed. Officially, international flights have been cancelled until July, but an extension of the shutdown is likely. "It still depends on the outbreak situation, but I think the earliest we can see tourists returning could be the fourth quarter of this year," said Yutasak Supasorn, head of Thailand's Tourism Authority (TAT). For tourists can open isolated islands, such as Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
Turkey It expects to receive foreign tourists from mid-June, flights from several foreign countries are already open. Tourists will be checked at the airport in special thermometry cameras and, in case of high temperature, checked for coronavirus. Temperature checks will also be carried out in hotels.
United Arab Emirates Hotels gradually began to open to domestic tourists in limited volume and under control. For foreign travelers, the country can open in July or September, depending on how the situation develops.
The United Kingdom maintains a 14-day quarantine for visitors, although from June 8 – voluntary, i.e. tourists are offered to “self-isolate” and provide an address where they plan to stay. Officials have warned that there is little chance for UK residents to travel abroad in the summer and urged them to focus on domestic travel.
