What will be the velvet season in the South of Russia: forecasts

Peak bookings of beach resorts in Russia falls on July and August. Tour operators and ticket agents report more moderate demand for the "velvet season" - this information was obtained before news of the opening of Turkey.

Seats in the resorts of the South of Russia in September are in abundance, despite the seasonal decline in prices.

In the summer of 2020, Sochi and Crimea became the leaders of air routes in Russia. According to Biletix, sales by destinations have recovered compared to 2019 and exceeded them.

The TOP-5 among tourists included Sochi, Simferopol, St. Petersburg, Anapa and Krasnodar. Sochi and Simferopol accounted for 54% of bookings in July – 30% and 24% respectively. St. Petersburg has 9%, Anapa and Krasnodar have 8% and 3%.

Most bookings occur in July and August, the demand for the “velvet season” can not be called “hyped”.

In the period from 10 to 20 July, the share of bookings of air tickets with departure in September-October was 5.3%, in the same period last year - 17%. In the top during the “velvet season” – Simferopol, Sochi, Anapa, Kaliningrad, Minvody. Many representatives of the travel industry expected that the peak of sales in the framework of deferred demand will be in the fall, but we see that the delayed demand is realized now, Biletix said.

Tour operators agree - the hype around tours to the Russian south passes, booking is at the pace of last year's season.

Tour operators note a decrease in the demand of tourists for "long" bookings - most sales relate to races in the near future.

“I see several reasons for this trend. First, tourists fear a second wave of the pandemic and the re-closure of resorts. Many tourists have already invested in tickets and hotels, and do not want to again be with deposits on their hands, said S. Romashkin, head of Dolphin.

The second reason is the uncertainty of tourists in the further development of the situation regarding the spread of the virus and the pandemic.

“Tourists who want to go on holiday in September know that they can buy a ticket closer to business. Then they will be able to assess all the factors - whether there will be money, whether the work will remain, etc. Now most tourists tend to buy tours with the nearest arrival dates.”

Market participants note that sales of summer tours are gradually being completed, and from September, the resorts of Russia will have a choice of places in different hotels.

A trip to the beach in September will cost tourists cheaper than in July-August: hotels reduce prices by 10% for arrivals until September 10 and up to 30% by the end of the month, air tickets are sold up to 20% cheaper than in August.

This summer, ticket prices in Russia are lower than in the same period last year. According to Biletix estimates, on July 10-20, the average check for air tickets in Russia was 7,357 rubles, last year - 8,723 rubles (by 15% more expensive).
