Sights of the Urals: railway viaducts
In the Urals, where the western border of the Sverdlovsk region with the eastern borders of the Perm region passes, there are railway viaducts - interesting engineering structures of the twentieth century.
Viaducts (from Latin via - road, path, duco - veda) began to be erected in the Roman Empire through rivers, ravines, gorges - where mounds were impossible to make, and the road was required.
Kazanburg Railway
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the authorities of our country decided to connect the European and Asian parts of the Russian Empire with the help of an additional branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway, the direction Kazan - Yekaterinburg.
On the border of Bashkiria, the Perm Territory and the Sverdlovsk region, the terrain is hilly, the plains alternate with gorges. The bridge builders had to find a suitable engineering solution to overcome the elevation differences from 190 to 500 m and a difficult hill - Sylvinsky ridge.
The construction of the road took place at an incredibly difficult time for our country. Due to the outbreak of the First World War, many bridge builders were mobilized, and since 1915 along this line began to place camps of prisoners of war with Germans, Austrians, Hungarians. Tunneling was done by the Chinese
After the revolution during the Civil War, the highway was in a war zone between the Reds and Whites.
The final completion of the construction of the road between Kazan and Yekaterinburg took place in 1924, already in Soviet Russia. The total length of the road was 855 km.
Viaducts
Seven Ural viaducts were built in the early twentieth century from 1914 to 1919 through river valleys and between forest hills, and two mountain tunnels were also commissioned.
Two viaducts are located in the Oktyabrsky district of the Perm Territory, five in the Krasnoufimsky district, Sverdlovsk region.
V.D. Gankin in the book "Kazanburg Road" writes about the grandiose construction: "7 bridges-viaducts, the length of 793 linear seedlings of them 2 - concrete 200 linear seedlings have a height of 7 sazhens. Such structures were built in the village of Pudlingovoy and the tracts of Ryabinovka and Long Bridge <...> The peculiarity of two viaducts - Ryabinov and Pudlingov - is that for the first time in the practice of railway bridge construction, reinforced concrete was used ....
Engineers who worked on the construction of viaducts: P.V. Shchusev, O.A. Moderson, M.F. Klochanov.
XXI century
By the end of the twentieth century, viaducts are dilapidated, they are gradually replaced by modern railway bridges and reliable embankments.
Part of the bridges can be reached by car, on an abandoned viaduct in the village of Big Sars - even walk, some structures are allowed to admire from afar - the facilities have fences, there are CCTV cameras and security points.
Viaducts in Saraninsky Logo, near the village of Pudling is currently used. Bridges in the villages of Bartym, Big Sars, the Black River, the Saraninsky factory, the village of Ryabinivka are decommissioned.
Picturesque Ural viaducts over a hundred years of history began to gradually turn into monuments of engineering art, which serve as a reminder of the dramatic history of our country.
Keep seeing!
