How has the pandemic changed consumer habits?

The coronavirus pandemic is changing the habits of insurance customers. Among the current trends are the interest in additional medical insurance for domestic tourists, the sale of travel insurance and requests for “covide” in policies.

Insurers note an increase in demand for policies for vacationers at foreign and Russian resorts. Previously, the top destinations in terms of the number of insured tourists from insurance companies included only foreign destinations, in 2020 in the top Russia.

VMI policy for travelers is often purchased by domestic tourists, despite the presence of MHI, which operates throughout Russia.

Additional insurance can cover medical and transport costs, compensation for the cost of medicines, the costs of posthumous repatriation, the return of minor children left without adult supervision, transportation costs for returning to their place of residence, etc.

When insuring travel in Russia by analogy with a foreign trip, insurance against accident, cancellation of trip, loss of luggage is possible.

Given the growing popularity of insurance among domestic tourists, some companies are introducing new products: AlfaInsurance has developed comprehensive programs to protect travelers in Russia with concierge service and COVID-19 payments.

The second trend of the season is inquiries from tourists about whether coverage of the policy includes risks associated with COVID-19 disease.

The amount of coverage for policies for tourists varies depending on the place of rest. “When traveling abroad, the amount of coverage is on average 30 thousand euros, in Russia – 500 thousand rubles,” says M. Prostova, RESO-Garantia.

Also, tourists often buy insurance against not leaving - a policy is needed if a tourist falls ill or falls into quarantine before the trip begins.

COVID-19 is a particularly dangerous infection, with similar strict quarantine measures for childhood infections: measles, rubella, chickenpox, etc. Policies against not leaving are gaining their popularity, because in these programs, an insured event is recognized as staying on outpatient or inpatient treatment for COVID-19 disease, the insurance company ERV says.

Participants in the insurance market believe that the increased demand for insurance policies will continue and increase with the opening for travel of other countries.

This year, people have become more likely to choose the maximum insurance coverage under the insurance policy to be sure that under any circumstances the coverage limit will be enough.

As the pandemic itself diminishes, the situation may change again.
